Dispenser Use Cases
TraceLink Roles
TraceLink API Guides group messages by application. Each API Guide contains all messages available within that application. Your company's business type (e.g. CMO, Wholesale Distributor, 3PL) and role in the TraceLink Network (Owner or Partner1) determine which of these messages to develop (i.e. not all messages within this guide may fulfill your business or compliance needs).
See below to confirm which messages you should develop based on your role in the supply chain and/or the TraceLink Network.
Configure and exchange (send or receive) each message separately as a best practice.

Dispensers use the Decrement Transaction History Quantity message to decrease the quantity of product within their inventory due to loss or damage. This message updates the Transaction History (TH) associated with the product to the new quantity in TraceLink.

Dispensers send the EDI Acknowledgment outbound message to Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, Repackagers, or Wholesale Distributors to acknowledge the receipt of the ASN when they purchase product.

Dispensers receive the HDMA ASN Transaction History message with an ASN containing the TH from Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, Repackagers, and Wholesale Distributors that sold the product, using the HDMA 856 format.

Dispensers use the Increment Transaction History Quantity message to increase the quantity of product within their inventory due to clerical inaccuracies with the inventory count. This message updates the Transaction History (TH) associated with the product to the new quantity in TraceLink.

Dispensers receive the Ship Notification message from Pharmacuetical Manufacturers, Repackagers, and Wholesale Distributors with a "lightweight" ship notification that arrives ahead of the full ASN. The Dispenser uses this message as a logistics document to facilitate receiving reconciliation.

Dispensers use the Shipment Receipt message to receive products against an inbound sales delivery within TraceLink. The system then:
- Verifies that the products received have a corresponding TH provided by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer, Repackager, or Wholesale Distributor that sold the product.
- Verifies the compliance fields required based on the product's origin.
- Updates the status in the TH to "Received."
- Assigns a lot number if not already assigned.
