Sales Drop Shipment Overview (EPCIS)
The Sales Drop Shipment message allows Owners and Partners to communicate the shipment of product. This message includes pertinent details of the shipment, including the seller and receiver location, contact information, serial numbers, and other order details (e.g. lot number, quantities, material codes).
This message is required to support the flagging drop shipments for those 3PL Partners who do not support the drop ship flag and portal access code.
The EPCIS version of the Sales Drop Shipment message supports the most common use case, in which all shipment information and serial numbers are sent in a single message. It does not, however, support incremental shipping against a delivery.
TraceLink has implemented a "Park and Retry" capability by which the system checks to see if the prerequisite message has arrived and, if so, processes the message. If the prerequisite message has not yet arrived, TraceLink takes the message and returns it to the queue and retries the message every 15 minutes for up to a two-hour period. This provides the opportunity for the prerequisite message to arrive and allows TraceLink to process the messages in order. If the prerequisite message does not arrive after two hours, TraceLink generates an error.

- When product changes ownership from an MAH, or a CMO or 3PL acting on behalf of an MAH, to another entity, an outbound shipment is generated and the serial numbers are put into a
shipped
state. - When product is moving between locations (i.e. not a change of ownership) working on behalf of an MAH, an inbound shipment is generated and the serial numbers are put into a
pending receipt
state.
